The English Department is composed of a team of subject specialists who are fully qualified to teach English from Year 7-13. English lessons are taught in a suite of seven specialist rooms with access to a central office and resource area. The most up-to-date books, resources and ICT are used to actively engage students.
At KS3 every pupil has access to a wide range of texts and genres. Our English curriculum is broad and challenging and texts range from Chaucer’s time to the present day. We invest in new KS3 texts each year, the most recent being Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo in Year 7, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne in Year 8 and Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd in Year 9.
In Year 10 pupils study the AQA Specification GCSE English and English Literature syllabus. This new integrated course will lead to two separate grades in GCSE English and English Literature from 2017, and is assessed entirely by examination. Year 11 are being offered the opportunity to take IGCSE English in the summer of 2016 and have already sat the AQA English Literature qualification in 2015.
The academic curriculum is enriched by a programme of extra curricular activities which include visits from authors, trips and competitions. Our KS3 students have been successful in the Young Writers’ creative writing competition Mini Sagas and regularly have their work published nationally.
